How a job runs

Four stages, and you can see all of them

Every photo below is from one of Viktor's own jobs, at the stage it describes.

    Strip it to the deck

    Old shingles come off, the deck gets checked for rot and soft spots. Anything bad gets replaced before a single new shingle goes on.

    Ice, water and underlayment

    Ice-and-water membrane along the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment over the rest. This is the layer that actually keeps water out when the shingles are working against wind.

    Shingles and ventilation

    Shingles go on in courses, vents and flashing get set properly rather than caulked over. Ridge cap last, running clean down the hip.

    Clean up and walk it

    Debris out, magnet over the lawn and driveway for nails, then a walk around the property with you before anybody leaves.

One roofer, not a call centre

Viktor Roofing is independent contracting. That means small volume by design. It also means nobody hands your job to a subcontractor you have never spoken to, and nobody quotes you a roof they will not be standing on.

Before you call

Questions people ask

Do you charge for an estimate?

No. Viktor comes out, looks at the roof, measures it and gives you a number. If it can wait a year, he will tell you that instead of selling you a roof.

Do you work in Peterborough or the GTA?

Both. Viktor runs jobs across Peterborough and the surrounding townships as well as the Greater Toronto Area. If you are not sure whether you are in range, call and ask.

Who actually shows up to do the work?

Viktor. He is an independent contractor, so the person who quotes the job is the person on the roof doing it. On bigger tear-offs he works with a small crew, but he is there.

How long does a re-roof take?

Most houses are a one to two day job once the crew is on site, weather depending. Bigger or steeper roofs take longer. Viktor will give you a realistic window when he quotes, not an optimistic one.

What happens to all the old shingles?

They go in a bin and off site. The property gets a magnet run over the lawn and driveway to pick up nails before anyone leaves.

Can you fix a leak without replacing the whole roof?

Often, yes. Plenty of leaks are a flashing or vent problem rather than a dead roof. Viktor would rather do the repair than talk you into a replacement you do not need yet.
