Shingle Roofing

A shingle roof is the whole assembly, not just the top layer. Viktor strips the old roof to bare deck, checks what is under it, then rebuilds it properly.

Most re-roofs in Peterborough and the GTA are asphalt shingle, and most of them fail early for the same two reasons: the deck was never inspected, or the ventilation was wrong. Neither is visible from the street, and neither shows up until the roof is five years into a life it was supposed to spend twenty-five years living.

Viktor tears off to the deck every time. Soft or rotten sheathing gets replaced before anything goes back on. Ice-and-water membrane runs along the eaves and through the valleys, synthetic underlayment covers the rest, and vents get set into the roof rather than sealed on top of it.

You get told what he finds under the old shingles, with a photo if you are not home. If the deck is fine, that is good news and it does not change the price.

Can you shingle over my existing roof?

Viktor does not. Going over the old shingles hides whatever is wrong with the deck and traps heat against the new layer. It is cheaper on the day and more expensive over the life of the roof.

How long will an asphalt shingle roof last here?

Manufacturers rate architectural shingles well past twenty years, and how close you get depends mostly on ventilation and installation rather than on the shingle itself. That is the part worth asking every contractor about.

What if you find rot under the old shingles?

Viktor tells you before he covers it, replaces the bad sheathing and shows you what came off. Deck repairs are priced separately because nobody can see them from the ground when quoting.
